In response to the gross misuse and invocation of the Emergencies Act by the Trudeau government, Conservative MP Rachael Thomas is sponsoring a formal petition to the House of Commons to change the threshold at which the Act may be voted into use.
The Petition states:
Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
Whereas:
- The current approval process of the Emergencies Act is inappropriate with only 50% plus one vote in the House of Commons.
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to amend the Emergencies Act by requiring a special majority of two-thirds of the House of Commons to vote in favour of the Act to pass it.

The intention of the Emergencies Act is that it is to be used only in times of severe national crisis. In that case, one must wonder why the threshold of votes sits at 50%. If Canada truly was in a state of crisis, and if the immense powers granted under this Act are actually needed, would a 90-100% threshold not be reasonable? Should we also not be considering the 7 sitting day period in which the government can grant themselves immense powers without accountability, before the Act is voted on? With great power comes great responsibility; a responsibility forsaken by our current government with their gross abuse of power when they wrongly invoked this Act.
This government is out of control and care nothing for the citizens of this country. They are an extreme threat to the democracy we the citizens hold dear.
304 votes should be the minimum required (true 90% of elected representatives).
